On Monday, Sept 9th, the Mason District Council of Community Associations unanimously voted to stand with the Fairfax Federation and other citizens associations to oppose a proposed RSU (Residential Studio Unit) amendment to the Zoning Ordinance.
The main concern is that the proposed amendment would allow the development of RSUs - short-term, rental efficiency apartments of 500 sq. ft or less in most residential areas zoned R-1 and up. While we realize there is a need for affordable housing, we believe strongly that the current amendment would have unintended negative consequences for our neighborhoods.
Attached please find the resolution that the Council approved. Please note the resolution includes many points from the Fairfax Federation resolution, with an important difference: MDC is urging that RSUs be permitted only in areas zoned R-20 and above, which is the standard in Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk and other Virginia cities. (See chart below).
Here is a link to the petition detailing our concerns. Please sign and forward to your neighbors. Every time it is signed, a copy is sent to the Board of Supervisors.
We strongly urge you and your neighbors to attend the Sept.17th Providence District Council meeting (7:30 p.m./Dunn Loring Administrative Center) and the Sept.19th Fairfax Federation meeting (7:30 PM/ Mason District Governmental Center) on this matter and let your voice be heard. See our web page for all of this information as well as other public and council meetings on this important issue: www.masondistrict.org. A flyer with the dates is attached as well.
We have asked Supervisor Gross to delay action on this matter since there are only two public work sessions before the rapidly approaching public hearing by the Planning Commission.
