Franconia District Station Weekly Summary

posted Nov 30, 2010 8:24 AM by Bryan Woodcock

NOVEMBER 8-14, 2010

I'm sorry that this is so late. The holiday and other things have gotten in the way. You will notice that there are no summaries, just a list. I will catch up as soon as possible.

The CAC meeting and homeless training on November 16th was a great success. Thank you to everyone who was in attendance. The next meeting will be on December 15th. This month our Officers are receiving training on the topic of Solicitors. The presenter is from the Office of Consumer Affairs. As with the homeless training, the solicitor training will be presented to citizens from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. on December 15th. This will be just prior to the CAC meeting and in the same location.  I have received a lot of inquiries regarding solicitors. Please send at least one person from each neighborhood. There will be no additional presentation this month at the CAC meeting. However, We will continue the discussion on solicitors and answer questions that were asked in November.

In the past several months I have urged everyone to sign up for the listserv. Beginning on January 1, 2011 I will start sending out these emails exclusively via listserv. All that you need to do is go to the website and sign up. Please send me an email if there are any questions.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CITIZEN'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CAC):

The next meeting will be on November 17, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen Wilson Community Room of the Lee District Building at 6121 Franconia Road. A social period will precede the meeting and begins at 7:00 p.m. This meetings agenda will include a presentation from the Motor Carrier Safety Unit (MCS). There will also be the normal Q&A with the Station Captain.

Recent CAC meeting attendance has been light. I encourage any interested person to attend. I would like to set the standard of having at least one individual per community in attendance. Please reply to this email to let me know who you are sending.

HOMELESS TRAINING:

In September the Officers of the Franconia Station received training on the topic of homelessness. The training was given by several Fairfax County agencies. The Officers learned about services that they can access to deal with homeless individuals that they encounter. Captain Bennett has asked that I provide the same training to the communities. Therefore, on November 17, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. the same training will be offered in the Helen Wilson Community Room of the Lee District Building at 6121 Franconia Road. This will be just prior to the CAC meeting. Once again I would like to see at least one person from each community. Please consider coming to the training and then staying for the CAC meeting.

SENIORS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT TOGETHER (SALT):

The SALT council normally meets in the Helen Wilson Community Room on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 6:00 p.m. Due to the holidays there will be no meeting in November or December. The next meeting will be on January 26, 2011. At this meeting your former CPO, Allie Eggers will be giving a presentation.

MATURE OPERATOR'S DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (MODIP):

The Fairfax County Police Department offers residents 55 years of age and older enrollment in MODIP. This is an eight hour course that provides safe driving information. The course is presented by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Officers and is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA). Upon completion of this course drivers are eligible for the Virginia State mandated insurance premium reduction. You will need to check with your individual Insurance Carrier to determine the amount of reduction. The classes are normally held the second Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is at the Franconia District Station which is located at 6121 Franconia Rd. NOTES FROM YOUR CPO

Hi All,

You will notice some changes in this report. I am attempting to provide good and accurate information to all of you. I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Several incidents occurred in our neighborhoods involving solicitors that you should be aware of.

There is a group that is selling magazines in the area. While this is not a scam they do not have solicitors licenses. A citizen in the Woodfield Estates neighborhood (Franconia Rd/ S. Van dorn St area) called the non-emergency number (703) 691-2131. We responded and ended up fighting with one of the Magazine Sellers and arresting him on several charges. I would recommend calling for any solicitor. While there are legitimate solicitors, most are not. If you need a magazine or other service you can use the internet or yellow pages. Remember to check for business licenses and references.

I was advised that on Friday, October 15 there were some suspicious subjects going door to door in the Wilton Woods Neighborhood (Franconia Rd/Telegraph Rd area). These subjects advised this citizen that they were from fairfax County. They advised the citizen that they needed to clean up their back yard or that they would be fined. They also asked questions about one of their neighbors. These were two females wearing red shirts. They had lanyards around their necks with a card that said Fairfax County. They left no paperwork. Their purpose remains a mystery. I have checked with every possible county agency. I have been advised that no County employees would conduct themselves in this manner. Plus, no one that would go door to was in this area. They were not soliciting and there were no break-ins in the area. Remember you can always inspect someone's ID. This goes for individuals from private companies like utilities as well. They should be able to provide you with a phone number that you can call and confirm that they are legitimately in your neighborhood.  If something does not seem right, do not let them into your home, and call the police.

On Friday, October 22 we arrested a subject who was stealing money from an elderly woman in Lorton. They tricked her into writing checks for tree work that was not actually done. We were alerted to this case by a concerned neighbor. A great example of citizens and police working together. Once again these people are required to have solicitors licenses, but rarely do. If you need tree work done you can use the internet or the yellow pages. The good price they give you may not be worth it. This is dangerous work and they may not have insurance. Once again a good reason to call the police.

A final note on solicitors. These folks do not want to have contact with the police. They will leave the area if they see to many cruisers.
